Camp, friends, school, and Cambodia!

Wow, so the past few weeks have completely flown by.

Inner-city camp was an amazing experience. We worked more closely with the people who were ages 11 and under, but we got to know a lot of the older people pretty well too. A lot of these were the sweetest, nicest kids and teenagers that I have come across in a long time. I have seen a couple of them several times since camp, but I miss them all very much. I learned so much during the five days we spent up there, about how kids in their situation have so much of a place in my heart. Before this week I knew that they needed some love and attention, but I did not believe the need was so huge. I know better now, and am looking forward to helping out with other inner-city causes in the future.

Another great thing about the camp experience was realizing that focusing on people who are in tougher situations that I am (and at such young ages!) and on doing what I can to serve them had a huge healing effect on me. I went up to camp still hurting from the past couple of months, but came back renewed and having a better sense of direction on whatever is to come next.

Since camp, things have definitely picked up their pace. I have made an effort to spend more time with friends, which has been a whole lot of fun. I have eaten way too many cupcakes from the shop down on 2nd Street, spent the night with the best group of friends in Marina Del Rey, eaten breakfast at Egg heaven, rented fun movies to watch, seen that movie about a monster house (I love kids movies!), met up with friends to talk and catch up, and so much more. It has all been amazing.

Amidst good times with friends, and plenty of hours of work, I had my orientation for school, which was nice to go to as well. I am starting to move past my initial phase of terror at the thought of my going to UCLA and into a phase of excitedness. I met a lot of people in the same boat as me, which was amazingly calming. My mom and I have been gathering supplies for my apartment, and I am loving every second of it.

Before anything having to do with my move to Los Angeles, however… CAMBODIA!!! It is in less than a week… what a rush! This will probably be my last post before I leave, because well… I have several hours to put in at work before then, I am still meeting up with people this weekend, and then there is that whole packing thing. I have no idea what my situation will be as far as internet access, but if it is possible, I will try to post a few times while I am there.

ATTN: I want to try to send out postcards and/or letters while I am there. Even if you think I have your address, please email me (seventyx7@gmail.com) by Tuesday with your current mailing address so that I can send you something. This obviously applies to friends only, not to the wierd people and/or robots who keep trying to give me comment spam at this website… you don’t get a postcard.

Okay! Long post! Enjoy the end of your Summers!

At this point, you should all be jealous of me.

Monday morning, I am hopping on a bus with 3 other friends of mine. Together we are going to be the counselors for an inner-city camp for kids whom we have never met before.

Did I mention that there are about 5 bathrooms (let me rephrase that: 5 toilets) and 3 showers for 60-100 people? That is a whole other thing… nobody knows who really is going, and we will not know until Monday morning when we pull out of the parking lot with kids on the bus.

I could tell you more, but we may as well wait until I get back for me to share the details.

Just be excited for us! We have no idea where this camp is (I think it is somewhere between 5-8 hours away), so I cannot even share that much. This trip is so not about me, we are just trying to help out with a worthy cause that is all about the kids… regardless, I forsee a lot of interesting experiences coming up over these next few days. My favorite activities from when I was between the ages of 8-12 (our understanding is that these are the correct ages!) took place while at “camp” in the mountains, so hopefully we are able to make it a worthwhile experience for them.

And if you pray… please pray for me and for my family… no details yet, but this has been one heck of a week; I do not want to be all down while trying to do a good thing.Stay tuned for stories!

How to wake up in a bad mood, Pts. I and II!

1. You are jolted out of peaceful slumber by the unoriginal “Cingular Tone.” Your friend has accidentally dialed your number at 4:45am (her phone was on her bed, keybad unlocked, and she sleeps funny), and you reject the call (you are half asleep and not even sure of what you are doing anyway). Three minutes later, your phone goes off with an obscenely loud and incredibly annoying noise letting you know that you have just recieved a voicemail. The only good thing is that you sleep lightly until 7:00am, at which point you wake up and watch Dangerous Minds on cable. You really love this movie and have not seen it in a while. Still, you decide, finding an excuse to listen to Coolio does not make the phone call any less annoying. This was yesterday morning.

2. You are used to waking up to the sound of your television, you do this because you do not have a clock radio. On this particular morning, however, your television turns on very loudly at 4:00am, and a horror movie is playing. At first you wonder why your dream has suddenly turned into a confusing nightmare with people screaming. Then you wake up, see Owen Wilson (Is it O.W. appreciation month or something?!?) freaking out on television, remember how much you hate scary movies, and are traumatized that you have been woken up by the most disturbing scene in The Haunting. No, it is not the scariest movie ever, but it still freaks you out, and nobody wants to wake up to the sound of little ghost children yelling “WELCOME HOME ELEANOR! ELEANOR! ELEANOR! AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!” This was today.

I am guessing that tomorrow morning at 5:53AM some neighborhood kid is going to decide to put on his own fireworks show, and I will be able to enjoy a third morning of waking up before the Sun, without having had an adequate amount of sleep the night before. And given my intellect (and also based on recent experiences), I will get confused and think that it is a real loud thunderstorm happening in the middle of an earthquake.
